Subrahmanyam Jaishankar politician and Indian diplomat, was born on 9 January 1955 in New Delhi, India. He was brought up into a prominent Indian civil servant Krishnaswamy Subrahmanyam and Sulochana Subrahmanyam, a Tamil Hindu family. S. Jaishankar did his schooling at The Air Force School, Delhi, and Bangalore Military School, Bangalore. He completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He has done MA in political science and an M.Phil. and PhD in international relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During his studies at JNU, he specialized in nuclear diplomacy.

S. Jaishankar started their career as a diplomate by joining the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1977. During his diplomatic career spanning over 38 years, he has held various positions in India and abroad, including as High Commissioner to Singapore (2007-2009) and Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2001-2004), China (2009-2013) and the US (2014-2015). Jaishankar was one of the officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Atomic Energy, and the Prime Minister’s Office who played a role in negotiating the India-US civil nuclear deal.

Shri S. Jaishankar was also the 31st Foreign Secretary of India from 28 January 2015 to 28 January 2018. He succeeded Sushma Swaraj who was the External Affairs Minister in the first term of the Narendra Modi government and became the 30th External Affairs Minister in 2019. Jaishankar took oath as Cabinet Minister on 30 May 2019. Later, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party to the Rajya Sabha representing Gujarat state on 5 July 2019. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2019 by the government of India, doing excellent work in Indian Diplomacy and leading role in restructuring India’s global conversations.
