A famous Indian Marxist politician, Sitaram Yechury, serving as the Member of Parliament was born on 12th August 1952 in Madras State (Chennai, Tamil Nadu) India. He belongs to a Telugu Family and his father Sarveswara Somayajula Yechury and mother Kalpakam Yechury are natives of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. His father was an engineer in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. His mother was a government officer. Yechury was brought up in Hydrabad and did schooling from All Saints High School, Hyderabad till 10th Standard. After, he came to Delhi and joined Presidents Estate School, New Delhi, and achieved the All-India first rank in the Central Board of Secondary Education Higher Secondary Examination.

He completed a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and an M.A., from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Later, he joined the JNU for a PhD in Economics. His PhD was canceled with his arrest during the Emergency. Sitaram Yechury starts the political journey in JNU, after joining the Students’ Federation of India. In 1974. A year later, he joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Shri Sitaram Yechury mostly engaged in various movements against the government. He was arrested at the time of Emergency during his studies. Later, he was also an undergrad for some time. After the Emergency, he was elected as the President of the JNU Students’ Union thrice during one year (1977-78). He along with Prakash Karat, created a leftist unit at JNU. Yechury was elected as All-India Joint Secretary of SFI in 1978 and went on to become the All-India President of SFI. He was the first president of SFI who was not from Kerala or Bengal. Sitaram Yechury was elected to the Central Committee of the CPI(M) in 1984. He left the SFI in 1986 and later was elected for a third term as General Secretary of CPI(M).

Sitaram Yechury was subsequently elected to the Politburo at the Fourteenth Congress in 1992 and was elected the fifth General Secretary of the CPI(M) at the party’s 21st Party Congress at Visakhapatnam on 19 April 2015 and was elected General Secretary for three consecutive terms. He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 19 April 2015 to 12 September 2024 and Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 10 January 1992 to 12 September 2024. Sitaram Yechury has served as the Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 19 August 2005 to 18 August 2017. He died on 12 September 2024.
