Ashok Gehlot, Politician and former Chief Minister of Rajasthan was born in Jodhpur in the family of Laxman Singh Gehlot in 1951. His father was a contractor better known as a magician and traveled to different cities of the country for the magic show. Young Ashok also traveled with him to different cities of the country while he was young. He completed his schooling in Jodhpur. Ashok Gehlot obtained a master’s degree in economics and an LLB degree from Jodhpur.

Later, he was inclined toward social politics with the inspiration of his father as the president of Jodhpur Municipal Corporation. Ashok Gehlot traveled in the eastern region of the country and worked as a social worker in 1971 after the creation of Bangladesh as a separate country from Pakistan. His social work for the refugees in the established camps in West Bengal Came to the notice of Congress Leader and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He joined the Congress Party and first time contested for state assembly in 1977 from the Sardarpura constituency. He lost the election to Janta Party candidate Madhav Singh. Once again Congress party gave him a ticket to Lok Sabha from Jodhpur in 1980 and he won the election and joined the Lok Sabha of the parliament.

Shri Ashok Gehlot won the Jodhpur Lok Sabha Constituency in 1980, 1984, 1991, 1996 & 1998. He served in different ministerial seats in his tenure as a member of Parliament between 1980 to 1999. Ashok was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Sports, and Civil Aviation under the last government led by Indira Gandhi between 1980 to 1984. CM Ashok Gehlot also headed as the State Minister of Textile in PV Narasimha Rao led UPA government in 1991-96.
