Engineering Rashid or Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Civil engineer, politician, and current member of the 18th Lok Sabha, the Lower house of the parliament of India was active in the state politics of Jammu and Kashmir. He was born in Longate town of Kupwara district of the J&K state in 1967. He grew up in the family of his father Mohammad Khazir Sheikh and mother Rahmi Begum and completed his schooling in his hometown and completed his B. Sc from the same town. Later, he completed his Diploma in Engineering in 1990. Er. Rashid Sheikh was arrested under UAPA in a terror funding case in 2019.

He was inspired by the politician Abdul Gani Lone of the Kashmir state. Abdul Gani Lone was known as the Kashmiri Separatist politician in Indian politics. Young Rashid was interested in the politics of the state in his college years. He joined the People’s Conference headed by Abdul Gani Lone in 1987. He contested in the state assembly election in 1987 only with an Islamic agenda as the candidate of the Muslim United Front. This was the time when the separatist movement in the Kashmir region gained its heights. Shri Abdul Rashid Sheikh lives in Longate City with his family, as per the affidavit. Sheikh Abdul Rashid once parted from politics and joined a government job as a Civil engineer. He suddenly changed his mind and resigned from the government job as an engineer and once again joined state politics. Rashid’s entry into mainstream politics was started in 1987 and once again he contested in the state assembly election in 2008. He filed a nomination from the Longate assembly constituency as an independent candidate. ER Rashik became popular for his clothing in Khan Suit and with his motorcycle or in public transport in the election campaign. He founded the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party. Engineer Rashid contested from Baramulla Constituency in the general election 2024 as an independent candidate from jail and won the election defeating Omar Abdullah by a huge margin of votes.

In his career Engineer Rashid has a strong hold on the young voters of the Longate and adjacent areas of the state. He applied for bail for the Champaign in the general election of 2024 but was rejected by the Supreme Court of India. Shri Abdul Rashid Sheikh defeated the former chief minister and former member of the parliament from the Baramulla constituency. His victory in the general election was celebrated by his supporters on social media and in his constituency.
