Hardeep Singh Puri, Indian Politician & former diplomat, serving as 33rd Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas was born in Delhi on 15 February 1952. His father was a civil servant, and he attended boarding schools in India because her father was posted to countries where there were no options for English-language education. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in History from the Hindu College, Delhi. Then, he worked as a lecturer of History at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He is an alumnus of Frank Anthony Public School, New Delhi.

He was an Indian Diplomate and served as the Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of External Affairs from 1994 to 1997, and from 1999 to 2002. Hardeep Singh also served as Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Defence from 1997 to 1999. He was India’s ambassador to Brazil. Hardeep also served as the chairman of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee during  2011- 2013. In 2011-12, he was also appointed as President of the United Nations Security Council.

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri’s political career started by joining the Bhartiya Janta Party in January 2014. He expressed admiration for the party’s approach to national security. He was elected as the Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha in  2018 and is still in service. He has served as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Civil Aviation & Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry from 30 May 2019 to 7 July 2021. Hardeep Singh also worked as Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs from 3 September 2017 to 10 June 2024. Currently, Hardeep Puri has been serving as the 33rd Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas since 7 July 2021.

Hardeep Singh Puri also contested the election in the 2019 Indian general elections from the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency, but he lost to Gurjeet Singh Aujla (INC) by 99626 votes. He is married to Ambassador Lakshmi Puri of the Indian Foreign Service, a former Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations, and former Deputy Executive Director of UN Women. They have two daughters. He was also awarded the Brazil: Grand Cross of the Order of Rio Branco in 2022. Hardeep Puri is a published author of several books, research papers, and journals.
