Mallikarjun Kharge, President of Indian National Congress Party and Member of Rajya Sabha, Upper House of Parliament in India was born in 1942 in Warwatti, now in the Karnataka state. His father Saibavva and Mapanna Kharge belong to a Dalit family in the state. Mallikarjun escaped the Razakars- Army of Hyderabad State before independence while his mother and sister died in a fire set by the Razakars. He completed his schooling and joined Government College, Gulbarga, and obtained a bachelor of arts degree. Later Kharge completed his LLB from Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College. He started practicing law in the labor court of the state.

He joined the Congress party and contested in the Karnataka state assembly election from the Gurmitkal assembly constituency in 1972 and won the election defeating his opponent by around 10000 votes. Mallikarjun Kharge lost only one election in 2019 in his long span of political career. He represented the Gurmitkal constituency of Karnataka state continuously 9 times from 1972. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge contested in general election 2009 from Gulbarga constituency and joined the Lok Sabha of the parliament in the second term of PM Manmohan Sigh-led UPA Government.

Shri Mallikarjun Kharge served as the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party for a long time. He played the congress observer role in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Assam states of India. Kharge was criticized by the political analyzer for the loss of Congress support in all three states. He contested in the presidential election of the Indian National Congress party against Shashi Tharoor. Later, he won the election and became president of the Congress party that did not belong to the Gandhi family after 24 years in 2022.

Mallikarjun first contested in central politics from the Gulbarga constituency in the general election of 2009 and joined the parliament of India. He was reelected in the 2014 general election from the same constituency in 2014.
