Mehbooba Mufti Sayed, Indian politician and leader of the Jammu & Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (JKPDP), served as the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, was born on 22 May 1959 in Bijbehara, J&K, India. She belongs to a Poilitcan family of Jammu and Kashmir and daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Gulshan Ara. She completed schooling in Bijbehara city and graduated in English literature from the Government College for Women in Jammu. Mehooba Mufti obtained a law degree from the University of Kashmir. She worked at Bombay Mercantile Bank and East-West Airlines, after moving to Delhi in 1989.
Mufti started her political career in 1996, by winning the Assembly Election of Jammu & Kashmir from Bijbehara, on the Ticket of Indian Nationa Congress. She later served as the leader of the opposition in the Assembly and launched a scathing criticism against the government of Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah. Mehbooba resigned from the assembly and contested the parliamentary elections in 1999 from Srinagar. But lost to the sitting member Omar Abdullah. In the 2002 Assembly Election, Mehooba Mufti won the Pahalgam seat in the state assembly from South Kashmir. She was elected to the Lok Sabha from Anantnag seat in 2004 and 2014.

After the death of her father in January 2016, when Mehooba Mufti was leading a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, she forged the same alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), this was the second time that the BJP and PDP formed a government in Jammu and Kashmir. On 4 April 2016, she took oath and became the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and became the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. On 25 June 2016, she won an Assembly seat in a by-election in Anantnag. But, she resigned as chief minister of Kashmir on 19 June 2018 due to the alliance between the PDP and the BJP ended.

Mehbooba Mufti contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the Anantnag seat but lost it to Hasnain Masoodi of the National Conference. After that, she again lost the 2024 Lok Sabha Election from Anantnag. She has been serving as the Vice-chair of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration since 20 October 2020 and President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) since January 2009. Mehbooba Mufti is one of the leaders who was detained on 5th August 2019 by the central government, due to repeal of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
