Omar Abdullah, Politician and 1st chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir union territory was born in 1970 in the UK to the family of Chief of National Conference and former CM of J&K Farrokh Abdullah and Mollie Abdullah. He finished his schooling in Srinagar and joined Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai to complete his B. Com degree. He enrolled at the University of Strathclyde United Kingdom for a Master of Business Administration. But he dropped out of the course in the middle and came back to India. Omar Abdullah worked with The Oberoi Group and ITC Limited before moving to London. Omar was married to Payal Nath, who was the daughter of an army officer in India. His sister was married to a politician and son of Rajesh Pilot, Sachin Pilot.

He contested in the General election in 1998 after returning from the United Kingdom at the age of 28 years from the Srinagar constituency. Omar Abdulla won the contest and became the youngest member of parliament in 1998. He was also appointed as the Minister of the State for External Affairs in PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. Later, Omar Abdullah became the President of the National Conference Party preceding his father Farrukh Abdullah in 2002 after resigning from the NDA government as the Union Minister and Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).

Shri Omar Abdullah concentrated on state politics after resigning from national politics. He started champagning for the state assembly election in 2002 although he lost to the Gandarbal constituency in the state assembly election. His meeting with the Army chief and president of Pakistan Parvez Musharraf in 2002 became controversial in Indian politics and diplomacy. Omar was sworn in as the chief Minister of J & K after winning the state assembly election in 2008. After becoming the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir he was once again crammed into limelight for the covering up a rape case in the state.
