Raj Thackeray, politician and founder of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena was born into the family of Bala Saheb Thackeray political family in 1968. He finished his early schooling in Mumbai and joined the Sir, JJ Institute of Applied Art for his graduation. His father Shirikant Thackeray was the younger brother of the Late Shri Bala Saheb Thackeray and married Kunda Thackeray, the younger sister of the wife of Bala Saheb Thackeray, Meena Thackeray.

Shri Raj Shrikant Thackeray joined politics with his uncle and launched the student wing of the Shiv Sena, Bhartiya Vidyarthi Sena. Before 1990 he regularly worked with his uncle and Student wing of the party to develop the support of the Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra. He was first launched into active politics by his uncle in the campaign of the 1990 assembly election of the state. After that, his uncle was never introduced in the assembly election. He promoted his son Uddhav Thackeray beside Raj Thackeray. So he founded Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in 2006 after resigning from the membership of Shiv Sena.
