Ramdas Bandu Athawale is a famous politician, Trade unionist, and social worker, serving as a Member of Rajya Sabha representing Maharashtra State since 2014. He was born on 25 December 1959 in Agalgaon, Sangli district, Maharashtra. His father was Bandu Bapu and his mother was Honsabai Bandu Athawale. Ramdas Athawale completed his LLB from Siddharth College of Law, Mumbai. He married Seema Athawale, on 16 May 1992. Ramdas Athawale is a practitioner of Buddhism Religion and is deeply inspired by Dr. B.R Ambedkar.

He is the president of the Republican Party of India (A), a splinter group of the Republican Party of India, and has its roots in the Scheduled Castes Federation led by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar since 1999. Ramdas Athawale has been the editor of a weekly magazine called Bhumika. He has also played a role as a founding member of the Parivartan Sahitya Mahamandal. Athawale has served as the president of the Parivartan Kala Mahasangh, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Foundation, and the Bauddh Kalawant Academy (Buddhist Artist Academy). He was also the founding president of the Bauddh Dhamma Parishad (Buddhist Religious Conference).

Ramdas Athawale served as Cabinet Minister for Social Welfare and Transport, Employment Guarantee Scheme, and Prohibition Propaganda in the Government of Maharashtra between 1990 and 1995. He represented the Pandharpur constituency of Maharashtra.
