Satnam Singh Sandhu, famous educationist and chancellor of Chandigarh University serving as a member of parliament Rajya Sabha was born on 22 March 1964 in the Makhu district of Ferozepur, Punjab. His father’s name is Pipal Singh and his mother is Kashmir Kaur. He belongs to a family of farmers in Rasoolpur, a small village in the Firozpur district. Satnam Singh married Damandeep Kaur on 21 June 1995. They have two sons. He did his schooling in the Firozpur district and completed graduation from Guru Nanak College of Ferozepur Cantt and Guru Nanak College, Moga, Punjab. 

Sandhu founded the Chandigarh group of colleges at Landran in Mohali in 2001. Later, he founded Chandigarh University in 2012.
